Common Questions
What people ask before signing up.
-
When should I enroll in Medicare?
Most people have a seven-month window to sign up — starting three months before your 65th birthday month and ending three months after. Missing it can mean permanent monthly penalties, so it’s worth marking your calendar early. If you’re still working and covered by an employer plan, special rules may apply.
-
What’s the difference between Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage?
They’re two different ways to fill the gaps in Original Medicare, and the right one depends on how you want to use your coverage.
A Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare to pay for the deductibles, copays, and coinsurance that Parts A and B don’t cover. You can see any doctor who accepts Medicare — no networks. Premiums are higher, but out-of-pocket costs are predictable.
A Medicare Advantage plan replaces Original Medicare with an all-in-one plan that often bundles in prescription, dental, and vision coverage. Premiums are typically lower, but you’ll generally need to stay within a network of doctors.
The right answer depends on your health, your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget. That’s the conversation we’ll have on the call. -
Why work with a local agent instead of signing up online?
Medicare has a lot of moving parts, and small mistakes (like missing a deadline or picking a plan that doesn’t cover your medications) can be costly. Parham meets clients in person across North Carolina and can walk through your specific situation face to face — something a call center or website can’t do. Also, questions always come up after you choose your plan – Parham’s service does not stop after selling you a policy and he is always available to you whenever you have questions.
-
What is IRMAA, and how could it affect me?
IRMAA stands for Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount — it’s a surcharge added to your Part B and Part D premiums if your income is above a certain level. It’s based on your tax return from two years prior, so a high-income year (even from a one-time event like a home sale) can trigger it later. If a life event like retirement has lowered your income since then, you may be able to appeal. This is exactly the kind of detail Parham walks through with clients so there are no surprises.
-
Do you charge a fee to help me choose a plan?
No. There’s no cost to you for working with Parham — you’ll pay the same premium for your plan whether you sign up directly with the carrier or through an agent. Independent agents are paid a commission by the insurance company, which means you get personalized guidance at no extra charge.
